Apple's New Siri Runs on Google Gemini — And It Actually Works

On September 14, 2026, Apple released iOS 27 to the public — and with it, the most consequential change to Siri in the assistant's 15-year history. The voice assistant is no longer purely Apple's. It now runs on Google Gemini.

What Changed Under the Hood

Apple revealed the partnership at WWDC 2026 in June: a rebuilt Siri combining Apple's own Foundation Models with a 1.2-trillion-parameter Google Gemini model. The architecture uses tiered routing. Simple commands stay on-device. Moderately complex requests go to Apple's Private Cloud Compute. The heaviest reasoning tasks — summarizing long documents, multi-step planning, deep context management — route to Google Cloud, running on Nvidia Blackwell B200 GPUs.

The practical result is a Siri that holds context across a back-and-forth conversation, understands what's on your screen without you describing it, and takes meaningful actions across apps. Siri also now runs as a standalone app with persistent conversation history — a direct shot at ChatGPT and Gemini's native apps.

The Privacy Tradeoff Nobody Should Ignore

Apple's pitch around on-device AI and privacy has been a core selling point for years. That pitch gets complicated when some of your queries route to Google's infrastructure. Apple's position is that Private Cloud Compute prevents even its own engineers from reading processed data, and that Google Cloud only handles the most demanding tasks. How much of your data actually leaves your device — and under what conditions — ultimately requires trusting Apple's word.

The full AI Siri experience also requires an iPhone 15 Pro or newer plus an iCloud+ subscription. The most capable features are paywalled behind Apple's subscription ecosystem.

Is It Actually Better?

Users and reviewers who tested the public beta since July 14 consistently say yes. Siri responds faster, handles conversational follow-up properly for the first time, and holds its own against standalone AI assistants. That's a low bar given where Siri started 2026 — but clearing it convincingly is what the $1 billion partnership with Google was meant to deliver, and by early accounts, it does.

iOS 27 is available now as a free update for iPhone 13 and later. The Gemini-powered Siri features are live in English, with additional languages rolling out through the end of 2026.
