BlizzCon 2026: Diablo V Confirmed, StarCraft Goes Open-World, and WoW Gets Its Finale

BlizzCon returned on September 12, 2026 — its first in-person event in three years — and Blizzard used the stage to make some of the biggest announcements in the company's history. Over two hours of opening ceremony, the studio laid out the next several years of its franchises, from confirmed sequels to genre reinventions that nobody saw coming.

Diablo V: After the Loss

The headline act was the official confirmation of Diablo V, targeting a spring 2029 release. The brief teaser framed the story as beginning immediately after a catastrophic defeat — "after the loss," as the tagline put it — setting a darker, more desperate tone than previous entries. Details remain sparse, but Blizzard confirmed the game is in active development and showed concept art suggesting a return to a gothic, European-inspired aesthetic.

Alongside the sequel announcement, Diablo IV's next season — dubbed the Age of Hatred — was detailed. It introduces a new playable race called the Skyborne, fresh class and race combinations, and a massive content update arriving November 4, 2026, with a Beta kicking off September 17. A Diablo animated series in development with Netflix was also confirmed, though no release window was given.

StarCraft Leaves the RTS Behind

The StarCraft reveal may be the most surprising pivot in Blizzard's history. The new StarCraft is not a real-time strategy game at all. Instead, it's a narrative-driven, open-world third-person shooter where players create a named character and follow their personal story through the StarCraft universe, targeting a 2030 release on both PC and console. Whether this lands well with the franchise's RTS fanbase or reaches a broader audience is a question the next four years will answer.

World of Warcraft: The End of an Era

Two WoW announcements dominated the rest of the ceremony. WoW: Forever launches November 4, 2026, with Beta access opening September 17. Described as a major live-service reset for the main game, it consolidates the existing experience and prepares the groundwork for The Last Titan — a final expansion in the Worldsoul Saga slated for 2027, described as the "culmination of over two decades" of MMO storytelling. What happens to WoW after that finale is still unclear.

Warcraft 3 Gets Its First Expansion in 23 Years

Perhaps the most unexpected same-day delivery: Warcraft 3: Forsaken Kingdom dropped at the close of the ceremony — playable immediately. It's the first expansion to Warcraft 3: Reforged since the original game's release in 2002. The expansion adds a new campaign, new hero units, and updated multiplayer balance, and it's included free for existing Reforged owners.

Overwatch Season 5

Overwatch 2 previewed Season 5, arriving October 6, 2026. A new support hero named Doctrine — described as "vampiric" in style — was revealed and is available for a limited Hero Trial through September 14. Sombra will be reworked into a support role, and Roadhog is getting changes to counterplay against his grapple hook.

BlizzCon 2026 covered a lot of ground: some of it is years away, and some of it was already live by the time the livestream ended. For Blizzard, it was a clear statement that the pipeline is full again after years of quiet.
