Final Fantasy XIV Is Now on Nintendo Switch 2 — Full Cross-Play, All Expansions, and a Free First Month
The wait is over. Final Fantasy XIV landed on Nintendo Switch 2 on August 4, 2026, bringing Square Enix's rebuilt-from-scratch MMO to portable hardware for the first time. The launch includes everything through Dawntrail — the full base game A Realm Reborn, plus all five expansions: Heavensward, Stormblood, Shadowbringers, Endwalker, and Dawntrail. That's over a thousand hours of content available on a handheld at launch.
The platform parity matters here. Unlike some console ports that ship as feature-limited versions, FFXIV on Switch 2 supports full cross-play with PC, PlayStation, and Xbox players. Your characters, progress, and gear all carry over — you can log in from Switch 2 and pick up exactly where you left off on another platform.
Subscription details are more nuanced. The Switch 2 version requires its own separate subscription — it doesn't share a single active subscription across platforms. However, if you're an existing FFXIV subscriber on another platform, the Switch 2 subscription is available at half price. As a launch promotion, all accounts receive one free month during the current early access window, which Square Enix is running partly as a server stability test before full official service begins.
Pricing is generous for new players. A free trial covers the base game and all content through level 80, with no time limit — that's A Realm Reborn plus Heavensward and Stormblood at no cost. The Complete Edition, which bundles all expansions through Dawntrail, is available at $59.99, or $41.99 during the 30% launch discount running through August 12.
The Switch 2 doesn't have the raw power of a gaming PC or PS5 Pro, and FFXIV is a demanding game. Square Enix has been quiet about exact frame rates and resolution targets — the 117GB install size suggests little was cut, but real-world performance in high-density areas like the Tuliyollal city hub or large-scale raids will tell the real story over the coming days.
For millions of lapsed players with a Switch 2 in hand, this is an easy way back in. For new players, the free trial offers one of the best value onramps in gaming: an enormous, finished story you only pay for once you're hooked.
