Google's Gemini Agent Wants to Be the One AI for Everything You Do at Work
On October 8, 2026, at its annual Gemini at Work event, Google Cloud unveiled what it calls the Gemini Agent — a single, persistent AI agent designed to handle the entire surface area of enterprise work. The launch consolidates what used to be separate tools (chat, document creation, code generation, autonomous task execution) into one identity that employees interact with by name.
One Agent, Not a Suite of Chatbots
The central design choice is persistence. Unlike a chatbot that forgets context when you close the tab, Gemini Agent maintains memory across sessions and can run jobs for up to 7 days in Google's cloud — continuing even after a user shuts their laptop. It can spin up temporary sub-agents to handle subtasks in parallel, then consolidate their results.
Persistent "coworker agents" go further: they get their own company email address, Google Drive storage, a Calendar account, and a Workspace identity. A manager can assign a coworker agent to handle vendor invoice reconciliation for a quarter and treat it the way they'd treat a contractor, with its own inbox and file access but spend controls set by IT.
According to TechCrunch's coverage of the announcement, the agent is reachable from web, iOS, Android, Windows, Mac, and the command line. It integrates natively with Google Workspace and Microsoft 365 and can be embedded as a headless agent inside third-party applications.
Model Routing and Multi-Provider Support
One of the more notable technical details is that Gemini Agent does not exclusively route to Google's own models. According to Futurum's analysis, it currently supports Anthropic's Claude models alongside Google's Gemini lineup, with OpenAI and open-weights models planned. The positioning is that Google is selling the agent layer, not just the model — a shift that acknowledges enterprise customers will not accept single-vendor lock-in on the underlying intelligence.
The Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform, which powers all of this, includes an Agent Development Kit for pro developers, a low-code Agent Studio for business users, and an Agent Runtime that handles scheduling, memory, and permissions. Google reported that nearly 90% of Fortune 100 companies already use Gemini Enterprise, giving the platform an unusually large installed base at launch.
What Changes for Workers
Financial services and legal specializations are in preview, with government, healthcare, and retail to follow. The practical implication is that a lawyer can tell Gemini Agent to review a contract against a defined set of obligations and flag deviations, then leave it running while they move to other work — and come back to a structured report, not a chat transcript.
The announcement also previewed an API that lets Gemini Agent communicate with other autonomous agents from different vendors, echoing the direction Meta's Personal Agent Protocol took in early October. Google has not committed to adopting that standard, but the trajectory is toward an ecosystem of agents that can delegate to each other across organizational and vendor boundaries.
For enterprise IT departments, the key new governance concern is agents that act autonomously for days at a time. Google's spend controls and audit logging are positioned as answers to that concern, but the operational reality of managing agent identities at scale is still something most organizations will be working out for the first time.
