Halo: Campaign Evolved Is Here — CE Gets a Full Remake Plus a New Prequel Arc

Premium and Collector's Edition owners got early access to Halo: Campaign Evolved on July 23, 2026, with the standard release following on July 28. The game lands on Xbox Series X|S, PC via Steam, PlayStation 5, and Game Pass — making it the most cross-platform Halo launch since Microsoft's acquisition of Activision Blizzard in 2023 opened the door to PlayStation releases.

What Is Halo: Campaign Evolved?

This is a full ground-up remake of the original Halo: Combat Evolved campaign from 2001 — not a remaster. Where Halo: The Master Chief Collection layered updated visuals over the original engine, Campaign Evolved rebuilds every level, enemy encounter, and cutscene in a modern engine. The geometry, AI behavior, lighting model, and audio are all new. The moment-to-moment game feel — the weight of the pistol, the panic of a Flood level, the silence of Halo's ring — is intentionally preserved.

On a 4K display, the difference is stark. The ringworld vistas in the opening level now show atmospheric scattering and cloud volumetrics. The Library's claustrophobic corridors are lit with physically based rendering that makes the Flood feel genuinely threatening rather than merely repetitive. Cutscenes are rebuilt rather than upscaled, with new voice performances alongside archival dialogue for key scenes.

Operation: METEORITE — A New Story Arc

The package includes Operation: METEORITE, three new campaign missions set approximately one year before the events of the original game. They follow a different Spartan fireteam responding to the first signs of Covenant aggression in the Outer Colonies. These missions are written as a prequel bridge between the Halo novels and the core game — accessible to newcomers but filled with callbacks for longtime fans.

Microsoft has confirmed that Campaign Evolved is standalone — you do not need MCC or any prior Halo purchase to play it. Operation: METEORITE is included in all editions.

Why This Matters in 2026

The original Halo: Combat Evolved is one of the most discussed games in history from a design standpoint: the 30-seconds-of-fun loop, enemy AI that reacts believably, arena combat that rewards spatial memory. A full remake puts those ideas in front of a new generation of players without the friction of 2001-era controls and resolution.

It also arrives at an interesting moment for first-person shooters. The dominant live-service model — seasonal passes, battle royales, endless progression — has generated significant player fatigue. A single-player campaign with a definitive ending, no microtransactions in the core game, and a price tag rather than a free-to-play model is a deliberate counter-positioning. Early reviews from press who played the full early access build describe it as exactly what it promises: the original game, done properly for 2026 hardware.

Where to Play

Early access is live now on Xbox Series X|S and PC for Premium/Collector's Edition holders. The standard edition releases July 28 across all platforms. It is available on Steam and included in Xbox Game Pass Ultimate at launch.
