MGS4 Finally Leaves the PS3 After 18 Years: Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Vol. 2 Is Here

For 18 years, Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots has been a PS3 exclusive — one of the most beloved and most inaccessible games in the series. That changes tomorrow. Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 2 launches August 27, 2026, finally bringing MGS4 to PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch 2, Switch, and PC simultaneously.

What's in the collection

Vol. 2 bundles three games:

  • Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots — the PS3 swan song, Old Snake's final mission, and the culmination of every thread Kojima laid across two decades of storytelling.
  • Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker — the PSP entry that introduced Mother Base and the FOB mechanics that would define Ground Zeroes and The Phantom Pain.
  • Metal Gear Solid: Ghost Babel — the Game Boy Color entry, included as a bonus.

Why MGS4's absence mattered

MGS4 was the MGS game you couldn't play unless you owned the right console from the right generation. Konami never ported it. It never came to PC. It was stuck, and as PS3 hardware aged and PSN support dwindled, it was becoming genuinely at risk of being lost to mainstream access.

The game is infamous for its cutscene runtime — the final act alone runs over an hour of cinematics — but also for closing the loop on Solid Snake's story with a finality that few games have matched. If you've played every other mainline MGS and skipped MGS4 because of platform access, that excuse evaporates tomorrow.

What to expect on modern hardware

Based on Vol. 1's precedent, Vol. 2 should deliver upscaled visuals and improved framerate targeting, though exact resolution and performance specs haven't been officially detailed beyond platform confirmation. The PC version will likely be the most flexible, with typical Konami PC port considerations applying.

Peace Walker's inclusion is arguably underrated. It's where the Big Boss storyline picks up momentum and where the building-base loop that defined the later games was first explored. Playing it on modern hardware without a PSP or PSVita is overdue.

The bigger picture

Konami has been on a slow, methodical journey to make its back catalogue accessible again. Vol. 1 covered MGS1 through MGS3. Vol. 2 completes the numbered series. The question now is what comes next — Silent Hill, Castlevania, and a full Suikoden re-release are all in various stages of revival. But for MGS fans specifically, tomorrow is the day the waiting ends.
