Star Trek: Outposts Unknown Launches Tomorrow — A Colony Builder from Ex-SimCity Devs
Tomorrow, October 20, publisher Playstack and developer Magic Fuel Games launch Star Trek: Outposts Unknown on PC via Steam — a colony management sim that marks the first time a Star Trek game has traded starship command for resource management and base construction.
The premise is straightforward but unfamiliar territory for the franchise: you play a Starfleet commander tasked with establishing and growing an outpost on an unexplored planet. You assign crew, manage supplies, construct facilities, and navigate a narrative set during the Strange New Worlds era of Star Trek lore. No phaser combat. No warp drives. Just logistics, crew welfare, and the cold reality of a planet that doesn't want you there.
Ex-SimCity DNA
Magic Fuel Games was founded by veterans of Maxis, the studio behind the original SimCity series. That lineage is visible throughout Outposts Unknown's design: top-down tile-based construction, granular crew scheduling, and a simulation depth that goes well beyond surface aesthetics.
When demo players criticized the game's early-game pacing before launch, the studio responded by adding night shifts, crew quarters, ground vehicles, and direct crew commands based on community feedback. That responsiveness to player criticism before day one is a good sign for a studio releasing its first Star Trek title.
A new crew, no baggage
Unlike most licensed Star Trek games, Outposts Unknown introduces an entirely original crew — no Kirk, no Picard, no Pike. Screen Rant reports this was a deliberate design choice, giving the game narrative freedom that tie-in storytelling rarely gets. Characters can grow, fail, and die without contradicting decades of canon. The Strange New Worlds setting provides the visual language and technology level without locking in the story.
It's a smart move for a colony builder specifically: the genre lives or dies on whether players grow attached to the individual characters they're managing, and attachment is easier when those characters aren't already fully written.
What to expect at launch
The confirmed platform is Windows PC via Steam. macOS support has been mentioned by multiple outlets but is not officially locked in. Console versions have not been announced. System requirements are modest — 16 GB of RAM and roughly 10 GB of free storage.
The Steam page currently offers a wishlist option with no listed price, which is unusual this close to launch. Playstack has not issued pricing guidance ahead of the October 20 date.
For players who have spent hundreds of hours in city builders and have always quietly wished Starfleet management was more logistically demanding, Outposts Unknown is exactly the niche crossover you've been waiting for. Everything else waits to be proven at launch.
