Xbox Is Bringing 25 Games to Gamescom 2026 — Gears of War: E-Day Leads the Charge

Gamescom 2026 has not even started yet — the main show floor opens August 26 — but Xbox has already laid out its entire hand. And it is a strong one.

Microsoft is bringing 25 playable games to the Koelnmesse in Cologne, marking 25 years of Xbox with 140 gaming stations and the company's largest Gamescom presence ever. Two titles dominate the conversation: Gears of War: E-Day and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, both making their first-ever public playable appearances.

Gears of War: E-Day — back to where it all began

Gears of War: E-Day is a prequel set 14 years before the original trilogy, centered on the first 24 hours of the Locust invasion on Sera — the catastrophic event that defined the entire series. For longtime fans, it is a chance to experience the cataclysm as a playable protagonist rather than reading about it in lore fragments.

The game launches October 6, 2026 on Xbox Series X|S and PC, and will be available on Game Pass from day one. Premium and Collector's Edition buyers get Early Access starting October 1. Gamescom attendees will play a dedicated campaign segment — one of the earliest public hands-on opportunities ahead of launch.

The rest of the 25-game lineup

Beyond Gears, the booth includes Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 offering playable Core 6v6 multiplayer on Xbox Series X, plus Fable, Minecraft Dungeons II, Metro 2039, Alien: Isolation 2, and Stranger Than Heaven. The breadth signals a confident Xbox heading into the second half of 2026.

25 years of Xbox

Microsoft is leaning heavily into the anniversary angle. The original Xbox launched in November 2001, and Gamescom marks a major celebration moment — expect special live broadcasts and anniversary programming throughout the five-day event.

Opening Night Live kicks off August 25 at 11:00am PT / 7:00pm CEST, with the show floor open August 26-30. If Gears: E-Day and Modern Warfare 4 playable demos do not justify a trip to Cologne, the 140-station booth filled with first-party exclusives might.
