Control Resonant Launches Today: Remedy's Paranatural Sequel Scores 84 on Metacritic

Remedy Entertainment's long-awaited sequel to 2019's Control is out today. Control Resonant has landed on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC with an 84 on Metacritic—two points ahead of the original—and a stack of reviews that agree on one thing: it is as strange and interesting as Remedy's best work, even if it is mechanically rougher around the edges.

What It Is

The game follows Dylan Faden, the original Control's DLC protagonist and Jesse Faden's brother, through a warped version of Manhattan under paranatural siege. The shift from the brutalist Federal Bureau of Control building to an open, city-scale environment gives the sequel a very different texture. Where the original was claustrophobic and architectural, Resonant sprawls—often to its benefit, occasionally to its detriment.

Remedy describes it as an action-adventure RPG, which is accurate: there are proper skill trees, gear systems, and branching narrative moments alongside the telekinetic combat the original made famous. The production is a co-venture with Annapurna Pictures, which explains the higher production values and a more cinematic story structure.

What Critics Are Saying

The spread of reviews is wide. Vice called it one of the best action RPGs of the year. Polygon found it "perfectly serviceable—and that's exactly the problem." Kotaku landed in the middle: "imperfect, but relentlessly, characteristically interesting." The consistent thread is that Remedy's worldbuilding and atmosphere remain exceptional even where combat and pacing stumble.

The Metacritic score of 84 on PS5 from 63 critic reviews puts Resonant in the same tier as its predecessor. For players who connected with Control's weird energy, this is clearly worth their time. For newcomers, it is a harder sell without the tightness the original had.

The Practical Details

Control Resonant is available now digitally on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam and Epic Games Store. It also launches on GeForce NOW for streaming. Physical editions are delayed to October 15. Mac via Steam and the App Store is coming later in 2026.

If you finished the original Control and its AWE DLC, Dylan's arc has genuine payoff here. If you are new to the series, the first game is worth a few hours of your time before jumping in—Resonant assumes you know who these people are.
