Funcom's open-world survival title Dune: Awakening makes its console debut today, September 22, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The PC version has been live since June 2025, but the console launch isn't a straight port — it arrives alongside a solo mode and a significant content update that changes the nature of the game.
The Console Edition
The PS5 and Xbox release includes a fully redesigned control scheme for gamepad users and two visual modes: Performance mode targeting 60fps, and a Quality mode prioritizing enhanced visuals. Xbox Game Pass subscribers get the game at no extra cost on day one. Deluxe and Ultimate Edition owners received five days of early access starting September 17.
What's Actually New
The bigger story here isn't the console port — it's what shipped with it:
- Full single-player mode: Dune: Awakening launched on PC as a strictly online experience. The console release adds an offline solo mode, letting players explore Arrakis entirely without other people in the session.
- A narrative conclusion: The main story now has a proper ending, which it lacked at PC launch. The narrative has been wrapped up for all platforms simultaneously.
- New endgame content and harder difficulty settings: Additional post-story content and challenge options arrive across PC and console at the same time.
The solo mode in particular directly addresses the most consistent criticism of the PC version. Herbert's Arrakis is faithfully realized — the scale, the spice economy, the sandworms, the political factions — but a lot of players simply didn't want a multiplayer survival loop attached to it. That's no longer a barrier.
Should You Play It?
PC reviews over the past year have been mixed-to-positive, with most critics praising the world-building and survival mechanics while noting a slow early game and heavy reliance on other players for endgame content. Both of those complaints are at least partially addressed by today's launch. If you were waiting for a solo experience, or held off entirely because of the online-only requirement, this is the version worth trying.
Dune: Awakening is available now on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. It's included with Xbox Game Pass.
