Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave, the 18th mainline entry in Nintendo's tactical RPG series, launches today exclusively on Nintendo Switch 2. Developed by Intelligent Systems — the studio behind Three Houses and Engage — it's shaping up to be the most structurally ambitious Fire Emblem yet, and early reviews confirm that ambition lands.
The game is set in the Dagdan Empire, a civilization that has prospered under divine rule for 1,500 years. The Heroic Games — a grand competition held in the capital Dagsion — grant the winner a single wish, and four very different characters each have one: Cai, a boy determined to free his imprisoned father; Dietrich, a wandering swordsman seeking a stronger adversary; Theodora, a queen chasing a lifelong dream; and Leda, a musician driven by revenge. Each route is fully voiced, substantially different in tone, and expected to take around 80 hours on a semi-rushed playthrough. All four together likely push well past 150 hours.
What Critics Are Saying
Reviews landed this week ahead of today's launch, and the consensus is enthusiastic with some qualifications. GamesRadar calls it "an ambitious epic where every route matters." Nintendo Life notes the game "dials the Three Houses formula up to 11," praising the 80+ fully voiced characters and tight turn-based combat while flagging that the sheer volume of content can occasionally weigh down momentum. WCCFtech calls it "an all-out 150-hour+ assault" in its review headline.
The Switch 2 hardware shows clearly in the presentation. RPG Site notes it's a visible step up from Three Houses and Engage technically — faster load times, stable performance, and a stylized art direction that scales impressively for a tactics game. That platform upgrade is doing real work here.
Bigger Than Three Houses
Fortune's Weave is set in the same fictional universe as Three Houses but stands completely alone as a story. Where Three Houses offered three routes plus a secret fourth, Fortune's Weave makes all four routes equally central — each with its own cast, class progression trees, and ending. The game includes over 80 recruitable characters, all fully voiced with individual backstories and battle skills.
