Forgejo released version 17.0 on October 15, 2026 — the community-driven fork of Gitea and the self-hosted alternative to GitHub and GitLab. It's a non-LTS release supported through January 28, 2027, with a focused set of CI/CD and migration improvements.
Actions get smarter
The biggest changes are in Forgejo Actions, the platform's built-in CI/CD system. Version 17.0 introduces two things developers have been waiting for:
- Workflow and job webhooks — you can now trigger external services when a workflow starts, succeeds, or fails, with configurable status notifications replacing the older action run events
- Job summaries — runners can now generate Markdown reports for each job, including tables and diagrams, rendered directly in the Forgejo UI. This requires Forgejo Runner 13.2 or newer.
Bitbucket Data Center migration
If you're running Bitbucket Data Center and want out, Forgejo 17.0 now handles full migrations — including pull requests, code reviews, and comments. This joins existing support for GitHub, GitLab, Gitea, and other platforms, making Forgejo one of the most migration-friendly self-hosted forges available.
FUNDING.yml donate buttons
Repositories can now add donate buttons through FUNDING.yml files, visible directly on the project page. This mirrors the feature GitHub has offered for years, finally bringing it to self-hosted setups — useful for maintainers of open-source projects who want to surface funding options without leaving their forge.
A breaking change to know about
One to flag for teams upgrading: absolute links inside rendered repository documents (READMEs, wikis) now resolve from the repository root, not the instance root. Links in issues and pull requests are unaffected. The change brings Forgejo in line with how other Git forges handle document links and improves compatibility when mirroring repositories.
Why Forgejo
Forgejo was forked from Gitea in 2022 under the Codeberg umbrella, with a mission of community governance and software freedom. It's grown into the forge of choice for developers who want full data ownership — no vendor lock-in, no account required, and it runs on hardware as modest as a Raspberry Pi.
Version 17.0 continues a steady release cadence of three months between major releases. The next branch cut for 18.0 is scheduled for December 17, 2026.
