Gamescom 2026 Starts This Week: GTA VI Gets an Extended Look, 50+ Games Take the Stage

Gamescom 2026 opens its doors this week in Cologne, and by any measure it is the largest edition in the show's 18-year history. For the first time ever, all 233,000 square meters of exhibition floor have sold out, with more than 1,600 exhibitors confirmed. The week runs August 24–30, with showcase events front-loaded from day one.

GTA VI: An Extended Look

The centerpiece of the week arrives on August 27, when Rockstar Games presents "Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look." The release date — November 19, 2026 for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S — is confirmed directly on Rockstar's official Newswire. Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick has publicly reaffirmed the date; pre-orders opened worldwide on June 25.

The Gamescom session is expected to show extended gameplay footage for the first time since Trailer 2, potentially revealing open world traversal, multiplayer systems, and more of Leonida. For a game that has absorbed years of anticipation, this is the final countdown.

What Else is On Stage

Confirmed playable demos on the show floor include Gears of War: E-Day, Metro 2039, Alien: Isolation 2, Onimusha: Way of the Sword, Dragon's Dogma II: Dark Arisen, and The Blood of Dawnwalker. Rumored appearances include Fable (reportedly pushed to 2027), Persona 4 Revival from Atlus, and first footage of Exodus.

Nintendo, Xbox, SEGA, Capcom, Bandai Namco, Ubisoft, Krafton, and HoYoverse all have confirmed public presences on the exhibition floor.

Why This Edition Matters

With E3 permanently cancelled, Gamescom has become the de facto major mid-year gaming event for the western market. A sold-out floor, a GTA VI showcase, and multiple independent streaming events make this the most consequential week for gaming news since Summer Game Fest. If you follow games at all, keep a browser tab open from Monday through Saturday.
