Eight years of God of War stories have belonged to Kratos. That changes with God of War: Laufey, announced at PlayStation's State of Play on June 2, 2026. This is the first mainline entry in Santa Monica Studio's franchise to put someone other than the Ghost of Sparta front and center — and the choice of protagonist is everything.
Laufey, known to longtime fans as Faye, was Kratos' first wife in the Norse saga. She died before the 2018 game began; her funeral pyre was the inciting event that sent Kratos and Atreus on their journey. Laufey opens at that exact moment, then pivots into the mythological afterlife realm called Everywhen, where Faye has been trapped. Her goal: escape the gods holding her there and fight her way back to protect Kratos and Atreus from a threat they can't yet see.
Gameplay looks like a deliberate inversion of Kratos' style. Where he is heavy and brutish, Laufey is fluid and ranged. Her primary weapon is a magic sword named Rue — voiced by Perlina Lau and visually represented as flowing, ribbon-like tendrils — alongside a suite of soul-based abilities that play more like a sorcerer than a warrior. The combat shown favors acrobatic movement, rapid repositioning, and elemental magic, compared to the weight and impact that defined Kratos' movesets in both Norse entries.
The game also leans harder into mythology as atmosphere. Everywhen is a dimension where multiple mythological traditions appear to overlap — the design shown is far stranger and more surreal than Midgard or Asgard. Laufey can apparently traverse between mythological cultures, though Santa Monica has not yet detailed how this affects progression or world structure.
There's a supporting cast worth noting. Jack Quaid voices Phranque, a sentient geometric cube that accompanies Laufey in the afterlife — comic relief, yes, but the trailer suggests he also carries real narrative weight. Deborah Ann Woll, who played Faye in flashbacks during Ragnarök, reprises the role and is now front and center in every cutscene shown.
No release date or platform list beyond PlayStation 5 was given at the State of Play. Santa Monica Studio has not confirmed whether a PC version is in the pipeline, which would be a departure from recent series precedent. The announcement trailer generated significant attention immediately after it aired.
The real test will be whether Laufey can carry a God of War game on her own. Kratos works because decades of storytelling made him feel earned. Faye starts with goodwill built by absence and mystery, but the combat, character, and world have to deliver on that promise. What was shown is a compelling start.
