Bellring Games launched Mistfall Hunter on July 29th across PC (Steam), PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S — and unusually for a mid-budget release, it landed on Xbox Game Pass on day one. The game costs $24.99 for the Standard Edition for those not on Game Pass.
Mistfall Hunter is a dark fantasy extraction ARPG. You enter procedurally-altered maps, fight increasingly dangerous enemies, loot gear and materials, and must successfully extract before the Mist closes in — or lose everything you carried in. It's a formula that has proven durable in shooters like Escape from Tarkov and Hunt: Showdown, but Mistfall Hunter transposes it into a pure action-RPG structure with melee builds, passive skill trees, and fantasy enemy archetypes.
What the launch build includes
The day-one content slate is solid for a game at this price point. Launch content includes the Withered Knight as the starting character class — a tanky, close-range fighter with shield-based mechanics — and the Hallowgrave, the game's first map. The map's design leans into the extraction premise: multiple entry zones, randomized loot placements, and the Mist Lord boss Sálmar as the anchor threat. Sálmar functions as a roaming elite that can intercept players mid-run, raising the stakes above a standard boss-at-end structure.
The visual direction pulls from the same grimdark fantasy well as Remnant II and early Soulslike aesthetics — desaturated environments, heavy fog, corrupted creature designs. The "Mist" mechanic isn't just set dressing; it functions as a time limit and an escalating threat that the studio says will evolve in future updates.
The extraction RPG moment
Mistfall Hunter is arriving during what might be called the extraction genre's expansion phase. The loop — enter, loot, extract — started in tactical shooters but has spread to survival games, ARPGs, and even horror titles. Bellring is betting that the same tension that makes extraction shooters compelling translates to fantasy melee combat, where gear loss hits differently when it's an enchanted sword you spent three runs farming.
The Game Pass inclusion on launch day is significant. It removes the financial friction that often holds back mid-budget games from building an early player base, and extraction games in particular depend on populated lobbies. A thin player base can kill the genre's core loop — if there are no other hunters to encounter, the risk and reward collapse.
Early Steam reviews opened positive, with players calling out the combat feel and sound design as particular strengths. The roadmap includes additional character classes, a second map, and expanded Mist Lord encounters — though no firm dates for those updates have been confirmed.
