After a delay that most developers will say made the right call, Phantom Blade Zero launches October 29, 2026 on PS5, Steam, and the Epic Games Store. It's one of the most anticipated action games of the year — a fast, brutal, wuxia-inspired action RPG from S-GAME, a Chinese studio making its major international debut with this title.
From September to October
The game was originally set for September 9, 2026, announced at a State of Play earlier this year. Shortly after the event, S-GAME pushed the date back by roughly seven weeks, citing the need for additional polish. The studio was explicit that it wanted to deliver quality at launch rather than post-launch patches — a statement that landed well given the industry's current sensitivity to rough releases.
Five days out, the move appears to have been the right one. Preview coverage has been consistently positive, and no major technical issues have surfaced in the promotional materials or hands-on previews.
What the game is
Phantom Blade Zero is set in a dark, stylized version of ancient China blending historical aesthetics with science fiction elements. You play as Soul, an assassin betrayed by the organization he served, who strikes a deal with a shadowy underworld entity to survive and take revenge. The tone is unambiguously action-focused — fast parries, precise timing, combo-heavy combat — but with an RPG structure of upgrades and branching paths through a layered world.
S-GAME has described the combat system as "Kung Fu Punk," which is about as concise a pitch as you can make. Think less methodical FromSoftware and more twitchy, combo-driven — closer to Sekiro's pace than Elden Ring's deliberation.
PC specs
The game supports DLSS 4.5 and path tracing. Minimum spec is a GTX 1660 or RX 5500 XT for 1080p at 30 FPS. Full path tracing at 4K/60 FPS asks for an RTX 5080 — a headline number, though most players running at 1440p with DLSS on will be well within reach of mid-range hardware. Standard Edition is $59.99; the Digital Deluxe Edition is $69.99.
Console exclusivity question
Earlier reports suggested a 12-month PS5 console exclusivity window before an Xbox release. S-GAME hasn't confirmed this, and no Xbox version has been announced. If you're on Game Pass waiting for it to arrive, don't hold your breath — at least not yet.
What to expect at launch
It's a debut title from a studio with no major Western releases behind it. Expectations are high, the demos have been impressive, and the delay was handled professionally. The main unknowns are how the full-game pacing holds up beyond the combat system's obvious strengths, and whether S-GAME's world design delivers on the visual promise of the trailers. Both questions get answered in five days.
