Planet Zoo 2 Adds Sharks, Turtles, and Flying Birds — Launches October 13

The original Planet Zoo was released in 2019 and became the gold standard for zoo management simulations — meticulous, demanding, and stuffed with content. Now Frontier Developments is following up with Planet Zoo 2, launching October 13 on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. It's the sequel's two biggest additions — aquatic habitats and aviary birds — that are pulling the most attention ahead of launch.

Sharks, Turtles, and Aviaries

For the first time in the series, players can build functioning aquariums. These aren't simple placeable tanks — they're fully customizable underwater habitats with control over scenery, filtration systems, and a staff airlock for zookeepers to enter safely. Black-tipped Reef Sharks, Hawksbill Turtles, and schools of colorful fish are among the confirmed aquatic species. Saltwater and freshwater habitats are both supported.

Aviaries add a parallel vertical dimension. Fully flying birds — including the vibrant Toco Toucan and the striking Secretary Bird — now navigate three-dimensional aerial spaces rather than the ground-level enclosures of the first game. Frontier says bird behavior is as detailed as mammal behavior, with authentic flight patterns and individual needs.

Conservation at the Core

Planet Zoo 2 leans harder into its conservation angle than its predecessor. Players don't just build zoos — they can breed animals and release them back into wildlife reserves, contributing to in-game rewilding programs. The game explicitly distinguishes between managing a commercial zoo for revenue and running a wildlife reserve focused on population health. Both modes feed into each other.

High-fidelity fur, feathers, and scales return with upgraded rendering, and animal behavior has been rebuilt to reflect individual personalities alongside species-wide needs. Zookeepers now have more granular responsibilities tied to specific habitats.

Platforms and Timing

The original game launched only on PC. Planet Zoo 2's simultaneous release across PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S is a direct response to demand from console players who watched PC players spend years building elaborate zoos without them. Frontier hasn't announced cross-platform saves, but console UI has been specifically redesigned for controllers.

Planet Zoo 2 arrives in what is shaping up to be the most competitive October for game releases in recent memory, sharing the month with Dragon's Dogma 2: Dark Arisen, Final Fantasy Resonance, and others. For simulation fans who've been waiting for something genuinely new from the genre, this is the month's quiet standout.
