Valve shipped Proton 11.0-1 on July 7, 2026, and it is one of the most consequential compatibility updates the project has delivered. The headline number: roughly 90% of Windows games can now run on Linux through Steam. Here is what changed.
EA Games Are Working Again
The most urgent fix addresses a regression that had been breaking EA titles for several weeks. The culprit was a lockup in Xalia — Proton's controller-accessibility library — triggered whenever Xalia interacted with the EA Desktop launcher's UI. Xalia 0.4.9, included in this release, corrects the lockup behavior, restoring the Steam Overlay for EA titles and ending months of complaints from Battlefield and FIFA players on Steam Deck.
Wine 11.0 Under the Hood
Proton 11 rebases on Wine 11.0, a major jump from the 10.x series. The new Wine brings improved DirectX translation fidelity and better support for older Win32 APIs — which explains why 1990s and 2000s-era games are the biggest beneficiaries. Accompanying it are updated translation layers: DXVK 2.7, VKD3D-Proton 20260410, DXVK-NVAPI 0.9.1, and Wine Mono 11.0. FEX 2605 is also included, targeting the growing number of ARM64EC builds for Arm-based Linux systems and Valve's own Steam Machine.
What Is Playable Now That Was Not Before
Five Windows games work under Proton for the first time ever: Gothic 1 Classic, X-Plane 12, Breath of Fire IV, Deadly Premonition, and Unknown Faces. A further set graduates from Proton Experimental into the stable channel, including Resident Evil (1996), Resident Evil 2 (1998), Dino Crisis, Dino Crisis 2, SHOGUN: Total War, DCS World Steam Edition, METAL GEAR SURVIVE, and Warhammer: Vermintide 2.
For VR players, No Man's Sky VR mode is playable again after breaking in Proton 10. Microsoft Flight Simulator receives a fix for VR controller tracking.
How to Get It
Proton 11.0-1 is available now through Steam on Linux desktops and the Steam Deck. Open Steam settings, navigate to Compatibility, and ensure "Enable Steam Play for all other titles" is on. If you pinned to an older Proton version in a specific game's settings, switch it manually to Proton 11 to take advantage of the EA and experimental fixes. On the Steam Machine released last month, Proton 11 ships as the default in the next SteamOS update pushed to the hardware.
