Samsung's Galaxy Unpacked event in London on July 22 produced three new foldable phones, and the headline device lands in territory no Galaxy Z Fold has reached before: 4.1 millimeters thick when unfolded, 215 grams, and a 200MP main camera packed into a frame the company is calling the thinnest flagship foldable it has ever shipped.
The full lineup — officially unveiled at the Samsung Global Newsroom — covers three devices: the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, the standard Galaxy Z Fold8, and the Galaxy Z Flip8. All three run Android XR, and all three open for pre-order immediately, with availability on August 7.
Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra: The Details
The Ultra carries an 8.0-inch QXGA+ Dynamic AMOLED 2X main display and a 6.5-inch FHD+ Dynamic AMOLED 2X cover screen. The chip is the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy — a co-engineered variant with Qualcomm tuned specifically for Samsung's thermal profile — with RAM options up to 16GB and storage up to 1TB.
The camera stack is the sharpest Samsung has put in a foldable: a 200MP primary sensor, a 50MP ultra-wide, and a 10MP 3x optical telephoto. Battery capacity is 5,000mAh with 45W wired fast charging. CNBC's coverage of the launch event confirmed pricing starts at $2,099 for 12GB/256GB, rising to $2,299 for 12GB/512GB and $2,699 for 16GB/1TB. European pricing starts at €2,199.
The thinness figure deserves some context. The Galaxy Z Fold7, Samsung's previous generation, measured 4.6mm unfolded. The Ultra cuts that by half a millimeter — meaningful at this size class, where every fraction of a millimeter is a significant engineering decision about where to put the battery, hinge mechanism, and camera hardware. The weight drop (from roughly 236g on the Fold7 to 215g on the Ultra) is more immediately noticeable in hand.
Galaxy Z Flip8 and Z Fold8
The Z Flip8 is Samsung's thinnest and lightest clamshell yet at 6.1mm open and 180 grams, with a 6.9-inch main display and a 4.1-inch FlexWindow on the cover. The standard Z Fold8 takes a wider-body approach relative to the Fold7, optimized for content consumption — the aspect ratio shift makes it closer to a small tablet in landscape mode. Both ship with the same Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chip.
Android XR as the Common Thread
All three devices launch on Android XR, Google and Samsung's joint XR platform that debuted with the Samsung Galaxy XR headset earlier this year. On a foldable phone, Android XR's main visible impact is in the multitasking layer — more aggressive app pairing, better windowing on the large inner display — plus native integration with Gemini as the system assistant. Samsung's own Galaxy AI features run on top of this.

The Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra is aimed squarely at the top of the market — productivity-oriented users who want a device that functions as both a compact tablet and a phone, and who won't balk at a $2,099 starting price. The 200MP camera and thinness specs give it a clear upgrade path for current Fold owners who held off on the Fold7. For most people, the standard Z Fold8 will deliver nearly the same software experience at a lower price.
