Valheim 1.0 Drops September 9 — Five Years of Early Access End With the Deep North

On September 9, 2026, Valheim exits Early Access after more than five years. Developer Iron Gate and publisher Coffee Stain Publishing confirmed the date at the PC Gaming Show 2026, along with the reveal of the Deep North — Valheim's final biome and the landmark players have been marching toward since the game first launched in Early Access in February 2021.

The Deep North at Last

The Deep North is the frozen, hostile endgame biome that has sat on the map's horizon since launch, perpetually out of reach while Iron Gate shipped Mistlands, Ashlands, and other updates. In 1.0, it opens fully: new enemies (including rideable creatures), a new crafting station called the Frost Foundry, new weapons and armor sets, and new food ingredients — including lingonberries you can harvest to craft recipes like meatballs with lingonberries. The biome is designed as the game's conclusion, and Iron Gate has said only minor content updates should be expected after 1.0.

PS5, Switch 2, and Full Crossplay

Valheim 1.0 arrives simultaneously on PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch 2 — the game's console debut. All four platforms (PC, Xbox, PS5, Switch 2) will support full crossplay, so your Viking crew no longer has to share a platform to share a server. For a game that built its community almost entirely through PC co-op, the console launch is a significant expansion of reach.

Price and Early Access Legacy

With the 1.0 release, Valheim moves to a new standard price of $29.99. Those who picked it up during Early Access retain their copy, of course. The game sold over 12 million copies in its first year alone — an extraordinary figure for an indie title — on the back of word-of-mouth driven by its procedural worlds, demanding boss fights, and the then-unusual approach of building Viking longhouses as load-bearing survival mechanics.

A Five-Year Journey

Valheim's path from Early Access to 1.0 was longer than most. Iron Gate, a small Swedish studio, committed to not rushing the game and shipped each biome only when it felt complete. The Mistlands update in 2022 was widely praised for its eerie atmosphere; Ashlands in 2024 raised the difficulty ceiling considerably. The Deep North has been the subject of speculation and fan theorizing for years, with players piecing together lore clues from cryptic item descriptions and loading screen text.

If you have been waiting for the right moment to jump in — or to drag friends in with you — September 9 is that moment.
